Bacterial blight

Bacterial blight

Fruit: Pomegranate
Disease: Bacterial
Pathogen: Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. punicae

Initially, spots are black and round and surrounded by bacterial ooze. Under favorable conditions, spots enlarge to become raised, dark brown lesions with indefinite margins that cause the fruit to crack. The disease may cause up to 90% yield reduction.

Water soaked spots or necrotic spots with yellow halo or irregular brownish black spots on leaves and fruits or brown canker without stem cracking. On twigs, branches and stems, brown to black water soaked lesions start around the nodes. These lesions develop into large cankers and may break on a slight pressure. Small cracks appear on the spots and in severe cases entire fruit splits open along the lesions. The spots may be covered with thin shining white encrustation consisting of bacteria. Splitting of fruit at necrotic spot and white shiny encrustation of bacterial ooze on infected fruit.
