Symptoms

The fruits can split/crack open and arils are exposed without any biotic cause. This leads to loss of market value and often makes the invaded fruit unfit for human consumption.

Causes

Improper irrigation may lead to cracking. Boron deficiency, calcium and potash deficiency indirectly contribute in cracking.

Control

  • Cultivate tolerant varieties.

  • Irrigate the plants from fruit setting to maturity, with adequate quantity of water at regular intervals.

  • Give two sprays of boron @ (2 g/litre) at fruit enlargement stage and before fruit harvest.

  • Apply calcium and potash as per soil test values. This helps to reduce cracking during water stress.
