Onion (Allium cepa L) is extremely important vegetable crop not only for internal consumption but also as highest foreign exchange earner among the fruits and vegetables. In the year 2013-14, It occupies an area of 1173 thousand ha, with production of 18777 thousand tons.

 

World Scenario : India is the 2nd largest producer of onion, in the world next only to China but the productivity of onion in India is very low i.e. 16 tons/ ha as compared to China and other countries like , Egypt, Netherlands, & Iran etc.

It is important that onion diseases, Pest  be recognized early in their development so that effective management strategies can be implemented

A variety of diseases affect onions, most of the diseases are caused by fungi or bacteria. Sometimes several diseases and/or disorders can be present at the same time. Accurate disease diagnosis is an important part of an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program and this module is intended to assist with identification of onion diseases, Pests that occur in the field and sometimes in storage.​

In order to diagnose disorders, factors such as adverse soil conditions unfavorable

pH levels, salt concentrations, nutrient imbalance should be considered.

Disorders may be caused by adverse weather, air pollutants, soil conditions, nutritional imbalances and pest control products. With the exception of weather factors, most of these conditions can be monitored and managed to reduce adverse effects.
