Onion yellow dwarf: Stunting of plants


Pathogen: Poty virus

Symptoms

Severe stunting of plants, dwarfing and twisting of flower stalks. Leaves are sometimes crinkled and flattened and tend to fall over. Bulbs are undersized.


Disease development

The virus is carried by infected seed bulbs, onion sets and volunteer onions. Many aphid species can transmit this virus from infected to healthy plants.


Disease management

Diseased plants should be removed and burnt. Spary malathion (0.1%) or metasytox (0.1%). Healthy bulbs should be used for seed production.
